About 2 years ago, the economy started effecting businesses. My clientelle couldn’t justify spending money on entertainment (Illusions and Mentalism) when they just laid off 3000 employees. I needed to keep making money so I decided to take the reins at the Safe-House, America‘s oldest Magic Bar!
For those of you who do not know what the safe-house is, it is a 1960′s themed members only spy bar. Back in 66′ David J. Baldwin the owner, fashioned the safe-house out of a Jazz club. Dave was a lawyer, however he longed for more adventure… There’s rumors of Dave working intelligence in the Korean war, however this could be the best kept secret of the safe-house.
Since 66′ we lost our Rolls Royce driver, but added a lot of additions. We have a book case that opens up from International Exports, a cover business. There’s a sliding booth that rotates into the safe house from our sister bar the news room pub. The news room has a 4 million dollar autograph collection from the likes of Hemmingway, Babe Rooth, and President Obama!
One of the appeals of the safe-house is the long running bartender/magicians. Sneaky Pete was the first. Then came Jeff Jean. Mark Bond… Matthew Teague… Chris Regaisis… And yours truly!
I’m not going to lie, the safe-house doesn’t pay GREAT, however the experience and practice I get is priceless. I also get A list clients and customers at the safe house. Being a 44 year old tourist trap, business men love it. I have worked magic at trade-shows, beijing, conferences, and corporate events world-wide due to this place.
